I am interested in becoming a bench jeweler, and have been doing as much research online as possible. As a non-traditional student, it is not feasible for me to attend classes full-time or relocate, so the school will have to be chosen primarily based on location. My current plan of attack is to enroll in the fine arts program with a concentration in jewelry/metals at New Jersey City University, after taking as many transferable credits as I can at the local community college.
HOWEVER, one website I visited recommended that a person going into this field *not* attend a fine arts school, as the programs simply won't teach the skills necessary to become a bench jeweler. Which has led me to try to find a school that specifically offers a bench jeweler program. I am having a heck of time trying to find schools within a reasonable distance, though!
So this question is really two-fold. Would it be acceptable to attend a fine arts program with a concentration in jewelry/metals, or should I continue my quest for a bench jeweler program? If the bench jeweler program is the better option, does anyone know of any schools in northern or central New Jersey, or northeastern Pennsylvania?
Thanks in advance!
