Bell Video Rates: So what do you think this means?

So I am now testing the SlingBox Pro HD and am very pleased with it.

But here is where things get curious. The attached image is showing some stats about the stream from Bell 9242 via component to the Slingbox.

The 9242 is set to output at 1080i.

Note two numbers from the Sling stats application:

  • Video Width: 1920
  • Video Height: 544.
I then switched the 9242 to output at 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i and go the following

  • 480i - Width 640, Height 480
  • 480p - Width 640, Height 480
  • 720p - Width 1280, Height 720
  • 1080i - Width 1920, Height 544

So what I have learned or have I learned anything?

Your testing seems to confirm what I have been claiming all along, that BEV's use of 720p, does nothing more than reduce resolution..... yet some people on this forum still argue the complete opposite.
It seems that their is obviously a drop in the horizontal resolution - just over half, to be exact (544 as opposed to the full 1080).
This could also be that you have the 9242 set to output 1080i (which by the way is what I have my 9200 set to - Better picture on my 1080P - 6010 Kuro).

I would think it has something to do with the height being scanned in at half because it is interlaced?

Those may be the number of "progressive" lines. 1080i is really 540 x 2. It may just be the way the box interprets the 1080i signal, although why would it do that for 1080i and not for 480i, and why 544?

We do know that some TVs do "bob" the signal to 540P on 1080i signals (see link). It is therefore possible that there is bobbing going on, but I'd want to see more information. If the BTV STB were bobbing the signal, then I believe we would have heard about it by now. Perhaps the Sling is bobbing? Or simply displaying a weird number...

There may be some (additional information) on the BTV bitrate threads where people have used computers instead of sling: BTV Bitrate (see the Bell Section links):

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=439937&postcount=47 (indicates 1080i)

PS. Why is the audio bitrate so low?
