"Caution: May Contain Nuts" no that isn't the name of this thread, It is the show I was watching Saturday March 27th 2010 on APTN when the following message appeared and was narrated! I have not been able to find any news releases in regards to this yet, but to me it would appear that APTN is the first to make a deal to have their signal carried over Satellite in a "Free to Air" but scrambled format by Bell TV.

*(CRTC 2007-53) possibly #34, see link http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2007/pb2007-53.htm

APTN is a must-carry channel AND is collecting subscription fees from all Canadian cable and satellite subscribers, from coast to coast. They make millions per month, EASY MONEY, for being watched by less than 1% of Canadians.

If I understand well the message, instead of upgrading their analog transmitters to digital using the easy money they drain from us, non-viewers, they will simply take down their transmitters on August 31st 2011, and save their money. They up north will pay nothing using a free BellTV satellite dish while non-viewers down here will continue to pay for this pathetic channel.

Nice move. How do I opt out of APTN? I'm not watching it and I don't wanna pay for it.

but the recent CRTC decision indicated that stations outside of major markets would be able to continue in analog, so long as they are below channel 52? so there is no longer anyone asking them to turn off the transmitters.

It does not matter if APTN is operating in analogue or digital, average Canadians are paying for the operation of the station which nobody watches.

Good move for Bell to provide free dishes and receivers to those affected, it is a very cost effective way to get rid of their refurbished SD receivers and broaden their subscribers base.

And subs are paying for english & french channels some are not watching.

This issue is more of "money grab" for BTV.

So they give away free dish and a receiver,. Once the sub gets the receiver he or she wil more then likely sub to more then APTNn. Its a 'sell gimick"

Nothings really for free there always a catch or some type of sell gimick involed.

(from Wikipedia).

(from CRTC's decision)

- Yellowknife NT population in 2006 was 18,700 habitants and has 3 local TV stations (CBC North, SRC, APTN).
- Whitehorse Yukon metro population in 2006 was 22,898 habitants and has 4 local TV stations (CBC North, SRC, APTN, CKWH (Ind.))

So, I guess since they have to upgrade to digital, they decided to shut them down, and partner with BellTV instead.

I believe this is a money saving/equipment saving for APTN, in that they do not have to install digital transmitters, and may in-fact increase their viewership.

Digital is not just HD, it is Either SD or HD. If Bell is going to use old receivers, or new, they would be probably be using the SD models like the 3100, 4100 which although are digital are not capable of receiving HD.
The up-sell would be to get an HD receiver would cost the consumer, or if they wanted additional programming.
So far this is all speculation as to what is going to be available.

Sorry shhould of been more clear SD=Shaw Direct.? How will they get the signal?

I do wish that folks would kindly refrain from using SD as an abbreviation for Shaw Direct here on Digital Home, or at least outside of the Shaw sub-forum. How about ShawD instead (and ShawC for Shaw Cable?)?
