Bell really needs a favorites theme pack. Most of the theme packs have one or two good channels in them, then some you don't want, and you still pay $8 a month or whatever for them. I know that Starchoice has a favorites package with customers' favorite channels.

Might as well send an email to BRICK [email protected] again. :p

They used to have one, but it was dropped sometime around the launch of all those crude diginets. It would be nice to have though.

Bell used to have, under the older packages, no longer available Canada's digital advantage, which seems similar to what you describe...

Go on bell.ca an suggest it...it used to be a popular package, they might launched something similar again

*C still has such a package. It consists of the basic package plus tier 1 diginets. It is similar to many basic cable packages but has more Canadian network stations. I think the ability to add extra channels may be restricted somewhat (or maybe that was with EV.)

Well, there are strings attached. You need 50% of your selected channels to be Canadian (and all the Canadian networks already in your basic package don't count).

Also, there should be a plan that includes less than 20 specialty channels, given that most people only watch about 7 of them. 10 would be plenty.

i don't think a "pick and pay" option is really that profitable for the company...you would then see many channels get ditched due to lack of subscriptions...lets say a channel like the Xtreme Channel...if it weren't included in a sports package, there probably wouldn't be enough individual subcribers to it to warranty BEV paying to offer that channel...you would most likely see a lot of channels disappear, then the boards would be filled with "BEV is getting rid of Channel XYZ, this is ridiculous, I'm cancelling all my Bell services and going with Company ABC instead because they offer that channel"...sometimes, you just can't win.

"i don't think a "pick and pay" option is really that profitable for the company...you would then see many channels get ditched due to lack of subscriptions"

Which company? The sat or cable company or the content provider?

I care less if the content provider makes money, doesn't make money or has to go out of business. If they have a product people want, people will subscribe. The current situation of having to pay for channels people don't want is completely wrong.

I am seriously considering jumping to Videotron after my BEV contract is up solely because I can cut my bill by 40% with their "Pick 20" offer. And even that is too many. Foxfan is right, 10 would be plenty.

While I would agree the current Bell ExpressVu packaging is easy to understand, I disagree with the "common" cable package comments -- at least with respect to Rogers (and in London, where you are). Rogers VIP package at $58.97/mth (before promotions or ongoing discounts like bundles) provides about 225 channels -- not 70 -- and a whole whack of extras like Turner Classic Movies and On Demand programming -- a good deal of it "free" like NFL Network and Treehouse. I believe Rogers reached or surpassed the 50% mark for digital recently so even for Rogers the "common" customer gets a great digital tv deal.

A digital network. About 40 category 1 and 2 digital networks launched in September 2001 and more have launched since.

That's what a lot of people want. Get rid of the garbage channels operated by Canadian broadcasters and allow the original US, British, etc channels into Canada. Why is it that non-English language channels are allowed to broadcast in Canada but foreign English language channels are not? Currently it costs nothing ($0, zero $) to file for a cat 2 channel that blocks all attempts by BDUs to carry US or other foreign channels that may compete. If it looks like a foreign channel actually has a chance, then a Canadian channel with low cost filler programming is launched and bundled with other channels. Is this protecting "Canadian culture?" (the CRTC's mandate) I think not. All it does is improve the bottom line of low quality broadcasters. It's probably better to get rid of the Canadian channels that are not performing to Canadian subscribers' expectations and either reduce costs or provide more value for the money.

well, i speak to tons of people weekly that still have analog cable service, and are wanting digital satellite, not digital cable.

"still have analog cable service, and are wanting digital satellite"

As I did, when I first got BEV. I signed up for everything and was a happy camper.

But, after 5 years of knowing what I actually watch compared to what I pay for.

It's a whole new game.

I don't want 200 channels, I don't want theme packs. I only want the 20 to 30 channels my household actually watches.

BEV just isn't delivering what I want anymore.

I still don't get what that has to do on whether or not Bell can offer certain channels in a package.

Doesn't the very fact that "it used to be popular" with subscribers,
excludes the possibility it ever be offered again in the same form?

Diogen.

Look TV offered something like that...of course, you all know where that got them.

Pretty much. Companies like Bell seldom do what is good for customers, only what is good for the CEO's bonus cheque.

If lots of client go on the bell.ca website and make the request they will see that this is what clients wants. If nobody requests it then they won't bother.
