Believers and Nonbelievers-What happened to me yesterday?

Fresh Start

I was on my lunch break and some guy i don't really know sat next to me and we started talking about the football and other normal stuff. I was also reading my newspaper and i came to an article on the Pope visiting the UK. When the guy suddenly asked me "do you believe in God?" I said "yes, i'm a Roman Catholic." Then out of nowhere, he started giving me all of this abuse, literally shouting at me and telling me off as if i done something wrong. He said "you're an idiot, there is no God, i hate people like you!" I don't understand, all i did was answer the question he asked me. This abuse carried on. I told him that "in no way did i mean to offend you, it's a free country, and i can believe in religion if i choose. I respect your decision not to, but respect my decision to believe." It was a mistake to say that, as i realized i just opened a can full of worms. He started going on about evolution and that events in the bible never happened, etc, etc. He then said i was "thick, intolerant and responsible for all the wars in the world". I said that "you're stereotyping a few extremists for all of us, i respect other religions, including your non-religion, and i'm not enforcing my beliefs on anyone, and to your earlier question, 2 World Wars and the Cold War weren't fought over religion, nor is North Korea an issue of religion". He continued to shout at me. By this time, i realised i had been totally sucked into an argument, so i got up, told him to just leave me alone and left.

Why do some people react like that?
