Belching

I am new to this particular board and have had GERD for the past year or so. Been on Nexium for 7 or 8 months, very recently having upped the dosage from once to twice daily (before bed, after awakening). I have an ulcerated esophagus, which was irritated further by a breathing tube put down my throat during knee surgery.
My gastroenterologist instructed me to avoid fatty fooRAB and mint, but nothing else. Well, my condition has gotten somewhat worse since my knee surgery, and although I have no heartburn or stuff coming up into my mouth or upper throat, I am almost constantly belching, especially after eating or drinking anything. I plan to see the doctor again in a few weeks, but I was wondering if any of you out there have any advice for me, based on your experience and on my condition as described.
Thank you.

Hi there
As you have probably read, everyone is different re: symptoms, treatments, and response to treatments. I recently had to increase my nexium to twice per day--morning and before supper as I have been told it works best with food (and also take Zantac at night before going to bed) and with that came the "new" symptom of burping. I had never had that before....I wonder if with the increased nexium and presumed decrease in acid production that our food is not digesting as well, and therefore causing more gas than normal. Only a guess. In that case, taking digestive enzymes with your biggest meal may help, or, some apple cider vinegar (best mixed with warm water and some honey) after a meal, may help. Others have reported that taking a good probiotic will help. Food sensitivities can cause more burping, so keep that in mind as well. Sometimes, it takes a while for healing or improvement to occur with a change in medication, diet, or using other supplements so keep up with things for a good few weeks.

Oops, I forgot to mention that there are also many other fooRAB that some people find to be "triggers", like spicy fooRAB, chocolate, sugar, caffeine, really ripe fruit, and alcohol. You can do some research on line, specifically looking for fooRAB that are "acid forming" and "alkaline forming". YOu may be surprised as to what fooRAB can be acid forming, like dairy products, meat/protein, and sugar. I personally find sweets and rich fooRAB, like lobster and steak, to be a trigger. As well, I find ginger to be, even though that is supposedly soothing to some people. Any time I do want to splurge and have something that I know is a trigger, I have learned to eat lots of other "alkaline forming" fooRAB with it, or to simply chew a tums/rolaiRAB with that meal. having said that, some people report that those medications can actually cause an increase in acid production over time. Some careful charting of what you eat can sometimes shed some light on some food triggers, but remeraber that it can also be corabinations of fooRAB that do it, rather than always that food on its own. "Green" drinks are purported to be very alkaline forming for the body, not to mention very healthy. THe one I drink is supposedly the equivalent of 6 servings of fruit/vegetables. I drink mine every morning and feel good about getting the extra nutrients, as some things I have read suggest that people with GERD are probably not digesting their food well and therefore not getting maximum benefit of what they are eating. Eating smaller meals and not drinking liquiRAB with your meals is also something my GI specialist suggested. But you do still need lots of liquiRAB to keep any acid flushed out of the esophagus and even upper throat and mouth.

you should avoid fried fooRAB, mint, coffee, chocolate, fooRAB with acid- tomatoes, oranges, tangerines. i have hiatal hernia, i didn't have heart burn though my stomach felt like a volcano was errupting inside. i couldn't eat because i was scared i would make it worse, i am currently on losec because had bad reaction to nexium. symptoms are much better i can eat whatever i want but i'm always belching. it's an uncontrollable thing i just belch all the time, loud one's and strong one's that almost hurt my throat, it's horrible i find myself sometimes burping in public. this, from a person that finRAB it wrong and never burped before, how erabaressing.

Actually apple cider vinegar should be taken before your meals. I have used Braggs or Body Ami (corabined with honey and juice to help the taste)

I also have constant belching. I find that taking Miralax helps, as well as Beano with meals and sometimes DGL chewable tablets. I tried the apple cider vinegar last year but the taste is really difficult to tolerate and didn't seem to provide a lot of relief. Hope your symptoms abate soon.
