...statement.? Before WW2, Australia was most closely allied to Britain. After the war, Australia aligned herself with another big and powerful ally. Which country was this?

Discuss the following statement.

"Australia can never be powerful enough to defend itself. It will always need a strong and powerful ally."
 
During WW2 the Japanese advanced towards Australia.
British and Australian troops hoped to halt their progress at Singapore, but it was a military disaster and Singapore fell to the Japanese and it appeared they would then proceed unhindered to Australia.
The British, rightly were committed to defending their homeland, by concentrating on the war in Europe.
Fortunately, the US had committed itself to the Pacific region and fought to halt the Japanese advance.
Without the assistance of the Yanks, its most likely Japan would have invaded Australia.
Ever since, Australia has aligned herself in various pacts with the US, most notably the ANZUS one.
Today, we have a free trade agreement with the US, further strengthening our alliance.
Further, Britain aligned itself trade-wise with the European Community meaning, the mother country was no longer our major trading partner.
While we will never outgrow our historical links with the UK, we have moved on as a nation.
 
That would be america. We released after world war 2 that britain could never protect us if japan atacked tomorrow so we sort after the US of A. Thats why we went to Vietman to impress america and improve our ties with them despite the beliefs at the time. Discuss what that staement says- Well we have a relatively low population to landd ratio. Because of this we are kinda easy to pick off. We try to defend ourselve by buying expensive fighters etc but we will always need the help of usa britain and the south east asia to protect us effectively
