Been ill, need to get well.

So I've been unwell for about 2 weeks now, and I'm trying to figure out how to get myself better.

I recently started a new job that is fairly demanding. I'm also finishing graduate school soon (I hope!) so I have been running around a lot. I have chronic myofascial pain or borderline fibromyalgia, but it doesn't interfere with my life much.

Two weeks ago, I caught a cold. Normal cold, sniffles, a little achy and tired. 6 days after that, I caught another cold. Evil cold, fever, exhaustion, sore throat. Spent the entire weekend in bed feeling too lousy to do anything at all. Went back to work Monday even though I still wasn't doing well. (Calling in sick at my job creates enormous problems for everyone else and is strongly discouraged.)

My job involves some talking to groups of people. Here's a free tip: Don't ever talk loudly for 5 hours in one day on an already sore throat. By Wednesday night, my voice was totally gone, and I started feeling feverish again.

Stayed home Thursday. Was duly punished for doing so when the person I spoke to when I called in neglected to pass the message along to those who needed to know. Friday, my voice was about half there and I was able to get up without feeling dizzy, so I went to work. Felt completely exhausted and ill by the end of the day, of course.

If I stay home any more, I might lose my job. (No, they can't do that legally, but if they really want to fire you they'll find a legal reason.) In one more month, this stressful time will be over and I will be working fewer hours, but I'm obviously not going to last a month at this rate.

How do I get my strength back? And how will I know when I'm ready to get back to exercising?

I feel so bad for you Jane. I hope you will be better soon. I just went through this last month. I came down with a horrible virus/cold with all the symptoms you described. I missed a week of work. I was so afraid to call in. I went in one day sick just to prove my point and went back home to bed. Then I was still week for another weak after that. I think it was 2 or 3 weeks before I got my strength back. It really scared me because it hung on so long. I have never had one last that long. It is this years virus. So just know that it's the one going around. You will be ok soon. Hang in there ok! I feel for ya. Just baby yourself.

I'm definitely getting better, took it easy all weekend but managed to get stuff done and still feel okay. I'm fine with taking it easy for a couple more weeks, too.

I guess what I am most afraid of is getting sick again before I can get well all the way. I seriously can't endure any more of this. I'm very careful about handwashing, but for some reason that's failed me 3 times recently...

Lots of germs out there that is for sure. That is why I stopped working full time at the elementary school. I was getting sick every week or two literally and I just couldn't take it anymore. Hang in there!

You have no idea. I take 3 different trains every day, passing through one enormous transit hub and one fairly large hub. I have 100 students, and I work at a school with about 8,000 students in one building.

The trick is, you never touch your face or anything that will touch your face, such as food. When it is time to eat, you wash your hands, touch nothing else, especially doorknobs, then eat. If this isn't possible, you eat without touching the food.

Worked great for months and months...

Now, if my voice would just come back, I think I might survive.
