The Chicago Bears put themselves in position to fortify their first-place position in the NFC North after last Monday night’s signature victory over the Dallas Cowboys. But they knew that such early-season security could be undermined by a hiccup at struggling Jacksonville on Sunday.Bears quarterback Jay Cutler anticipated Jacksonville would focus on slowing down his prime receiver Brandon Marshall.
“I think week by week, teams are going to try to take ‘B’ away and make those other guys make plays,” Cutler said earlier in the week. “I think that’s going to be the philosophy behind that.
“They’re going to bet that defensively they can cover those other guys and not let ‘B’ beat them. That’s what we’re seeing a lot of. But we have a lot of belief in our guys- Kellen (Davis) and Alshon (Jeffery) and (Devin Hester) and Matt Forte ... all those guys we need to make plays.”
Marshall caught seven passes for 138 yards and a touchdown against the Cowboys. Davis, Hester and Jeffery each had three catches. Forte and Bush each had one catch.
Cutler, who has displayed uneven performances this season, completed 18 of 24 passes for 275 yards and 2 TDs at Dallas. His passer rating was 140.1.
“We’ve just got to execute," Cutler said. "It’s all about consistency, putting together a good offensive strategy and executing week in and week out. We’ve just got to keep handling business.”
The Bears’ defense took the pressure off Cutler against the Cowboys, intercepting five Tony Romo passes and sacking him seven times.
