i read somewhere that bears don't like and are not attracted to these prepackaged food; like Mountain house. is it true? does this mean i don't have to hand a bear bag? also what are bears are attracted to? and is it possible to just hang your whole backpack then just your food bag? i mean just hanging your backpack is kinda more practical then buying a sack just to put your food in it. though it will be hard to find a branch to support the weight of the backpack. so anyway, are bears attracted to prepackaged food (e.g. mountain house), what bears are really attracted to, and can you simply hang your backpack?
thank you

Anything that a bear can smell, and smells like it MIGHT be food will attract them. This can be just about anything at all including scents they have never experienced before!

So, just because the Mountain house meal is in a well sealed bag, doesn't mean there isn't some residue on the outside of the bag. Bear can smell that tiny bit of residue. So, yes bear can be attracted to your pre-packaged meals.

As for hanging your food from a tree limb, if you won't need to get anything out of your pack just hang the whole mess! If you will be needing stuff from the pack you can just take all that you will need out of it and still hang it with the food.

I have never had a bear problem but that is mostly due to the fact that I don't visit very popular "campgrounds" and prefer to get as far from people as I can when camping. Bears who are used to finding food in campgrounds will be the worst while those who have little or no contact with humans will tend to stay far away from you.
