BB Bold 9700 or HTC Desire

I'm thinking of signing a 3 year deal with telus. Somthing like 200 mins, 1gb data, unlimited text, CID, unlm ev/w at 7 for around $41 +tax a month. Now, I send an average of 10 text messages per day but I think that is because I am on a pay as you go system with Speakout. With unlimited text I can picture my habits changing. Although I think I will enjoy the HTC's overall media and OS more, all of my friends have BBM.

I go to school in Waterloo, so its like RIM city where everyone has a BB. I'm also in business so most of my work associates have blackberries as well. Would an HTC look silly in a business environment?

I would like a phone that can play movies and from what I've read and heard, BB OS is nothing special with a very basic media player. Although the desire doesnt play divx movies an update will be on the way. But when? I've seen news clips from early 2010 saying that android will be getting divx playback but I dont know if it has arrived yet.

Which phone will hav the best durability over time? I tend to get attached to my belongings and dont normally sell my possessions. I've heard the BB's battery performance heads downhill after about 6-8 months. Is this the case?

Lastly, Ive had my old K790a for years now, and Ive always had sony ericssons. Up until recently I never used or heard of HTC. Is it a trusted brand? What does the HoFo community think?

Sorry for all the questions, but it really is a tough decision

I would very likely go for the Desire.

Simply speaking, the BlackBerry OS is old, especially pre-6. I wouldn't consider BBM a selling point if you could run a multi-network IM client (though I haven't seen BBM support outside of RIM, for obvious reasons). The Desire is just more advanced and exciting as a whole.

Reliability isn't as clean cut as you might think. The Desire does have a large touchscreen that you'll want to protect, but I've heard that even the Bold 9700 can have some flakiness over time with things like the trackpad.

HTC is very well known by now. It's been in the market for much of the past decade, whether making phones for someone else or on its own. It's usually considered the largest backer of Android and is responsible for making the T-Mobile G1 (the first Android phone) as well as the Nexus One. The Desire is already the go-to phone for Android in Europe.

Funnily enough, I'm in a similar situation between these two phones, so I thought I'd post in here rather than create a new thread. I'm wanting to get a two year contract with Telus, with the V&D 50 Plan (Aka, 100 local & bonus minutes, unlimited texts, 500 MB data).

I'm currently on Fido pay-as-you-go, and don't send that many texts because I'm afraid of upturning my limit. Though, as OP said, that will change if I get unlimited texts.

I'm mostly looking for good internet that will get me through the day when I don't have access to the computer. That would presumably be in tight spots, like the bus seeing as how I do have a desktop computer at home and a netbook that comes to school with me/moves around my house. I am a high school student, and none of my close circle has a BB- or any kind of smart phone, for that matter. Therefore, BBM isn't that big of a priority to me, or any of that other 'corporate features' that Blackberry has to offer.

That said though, I would like something that offers fast and effective typing. I participate in a hefty writing event each November that requires 50,000 words. I would like to be able to do some writing on my phone, again in tight spots where using a computer wouldn't be very bright. From my experience, touch screen keyboards have been finicky and this is where the BB's QWERTY layout would be very useful.

Is there a Google Docs app for BB yet? From what I've found online, I know that there are apps that allow editing for both iPhone and Android, but I've been having trouble finding information for BB. Google Docs is my word processor of choice, and being able to edit documents on my phone is fairly important to me.

I've read various things about the Desire's battery life, and so I'm expecting some ****** battery life from the get-go on that one. I'm gonna guess that the 9700 offers some decency there, right? My Nokia Classic that I have right now lasts about ten hours of light internet use, and about 4 days stand time. Would the 9700 compare to that?

Blackberry tip:

A lot of the hardware failures incurred with Blackberries comes with the trapped moisture going through the keyboard and start corroding something. This happens like say, putting the Blackberry on your pocket while running or exercising. So its recommended you put the phone on an holster with access to clean open air.

The Desire is no doubt better if you're into movie and media consumption. It would also be a prime choice if your primary email account is GMail.

If your company is using BES with company supplied email addresses, you may not have a choice but to use a Blackberry. Since you're not working with a company yet, being a student, having web access especially on mobile search is more helpful to your studies. In this case, you'r better off with the Desire. Personally for me, the Desire makes a great information gatherer and information management hub.
