was the battle of the somme where soldiers went over the top into no mans land and fought? if no what was it
 
I think the battle of the somme was a battle fought in France and finished in March 1917. Going over the top is a general term used about WW1 for soldiers who had to run out of their bunker towards the enemy while machine guns were aimed in their direction trying to kill them. As has been suggested the movie "Gallipoli" gives a good idea of what going over the top means.
 
There were hundreds of battles throughout Europe during the Great War, including the Battle of the Somme where "the soldiers went over the top into 'No Man's Land' and fought. Your best bet is to research the Battle of Somme by either reading one of the several good books written about it, or by going to this website:
