battery overheating!?!?!

what causes a battery begin to heat up really hot while it is not charging or in any heavy use mode. most of the time this has happened, my phone is just relaxing in sleep or powersave move. when it gets really hot, it also seems to drain the battery extremely quick........any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure you don't have applications running in the background when it's overheating?

i meant to post a reply last week and never got around to it....sorry. i had the same problem almost two weeks ago. it seemed that the gprs session would not end, and the phone was very hot and the battery was draining quickly. i pulled the battery, waited a couple of minutes and restarted it. all has been well since. i have roadsync syncing with an exchange server every 15 minutes, but other than that, there are no other programs automatically accessing the internet in the background. if it were to have happened again i was planning to completely reset the phone and set it up again.
