bass drum pedal? help?

how do i make my pedal hit the bass drum before it is pushed down to the floor? like make it hit the drum about half way. sorry if this is unclear.. i dont really know how to describe it.
 
what kind of pedal do you have? in general, the nicer and more expensive the pedal, the more options for adjustments and fine tuning it will have. i have played on some cheap pedals before that have very minimal adjustment options. but its kind of hard to give you tips without knowing a little more. is this a double pedal? if youre having problems with the slave pedal, you can try clamping the arm in a different position.
