basics to know about oil painting?

i have found a gap in art auctioneering. i know of an oil painting which was estimated to fetch $1500 but went on to fetch $30000. i have bought a beautiful painting which costs $80 and i phoned an auction centre and they said i must come with it so that they see it. what should i know of oil paintings i have no idea. what should i be aware of?
any basic stuff which i should know of on oil paintings and art auctions would be appreciated
 
So take it in and show him. You have to trust somebody and you have to learn to be a judge of character. If you don't know who you can trust you'll just have to take the 7 years of art history training and become the expert yourself.
