Basic Photography Kit - What to buy?

well if money isnt the problem id strongly suggest nikon D80 or Canon A600
perfect for good photography since you want it as a career as well
A levels wouldnt really need that high tech a piece so if you wanna begin slow and get a small hang of it then a Sony W80 is nice for newbies before moving on to something.... nicer...

check reviews of these cameras from flick.com and these guys use them a lot so give good feedback
prices are available through flickr too...
 
I am starting an A Level course in photography and I need to buy a basic kit. However, this is something I want to pursue as a career so I want to have a decent enough camera to use for work on the future.
Can anyone recommend a great Digital SLR that should see me through?
Also, how many/what type of lenses should I get for my starter kit?
Any other bits and pieces I will need?

I only do causal photography, but I can still give you my $.02...
There will always be the Nikon vs Canon debate, and I personally believe that both make excellent cameras.
The Nikon D40 is a really nice and inexpensive digital SLR. If you go to a higher level Nikon camera, you will notice more of a "pro" feel, rather than the more consumer friendly features of the D40. (even though it looks quite pro to the average person)

As far as lenses, the simplest way to start would be something like a 55-200mm zoom lens and 18-55mm wide-angle lens. This gives you coverage all the way from wide to a decent zoom. I would also consider a 50mm f/1.8 lens. This kind of lens won't allow zoom, but it has a wider aperture which will allow you to take better non-flash pictures in low light.

One thing to always keep in mind is that the lens is ultimately what will have the biggest effect on your photos. Also consider a couple of filters such as a UV (cheap, and protects your lens) and a polarizer (great for bright sunlight)
