If a player strikes out, but the ball bounced far away from catcher, why should the player be allowed to run? Shouldn't it be an automatic out?

If the catcher does not catch the ball and you swing and miss, you get to run to first base. The catcher can pick up the ball and tag you or throw it to first base before you get there and then you are out. No matter what it still counts as a strike out for the pitcher.

it is just a rule that baseball has had for years. Who knows why exactly but its been around a long time
