There are a few new treatment options for Barretts -- 1. Radio Frequency Ablation (which basically burns off the bad cells); 2. Cyrospray Ablation (which basically uses liquid nitrogen to freeze off the bad cells). You can find more details on each if you google them. Each has been used to remove the bad Barretts cells and prevent the condition from possibly progressing to esophageal cancer.

My wife had the RF ablation done in July and is doing better. It hurt a bit and lost some weight after procedure she said. Going back for re-exam in a couple of weeks.

Our insurance would not pay as they considered it "experimental". So we paid out fo pocket. Her Dad died of esophogeal cancer in his 40's so doc wanted to do procedure.

Speaking from first-hand experience:There are several things you can do. First and foremost seek advice from no less than 3 doctors specializing in that field. I suggest the Mayo Clinic in AZ should be one of them. Several very important suggestions: don't eat for 3 hours before going to bed (this is very important). Don't eat and recline. Don't eat high acid producing fooRAB (see online info...there's a lot of it). Some say raise the head of your be a few inches or just use several pillows. However, that will do no good whatsoever. You need to raise your upper torso from about waist to the point your hear is 7 inches above your waist. Either purchase a bed-wedge or an elect adjustable bed (duel 80" twins when put together side-by-side = a King bed. They are quite nice, come with wireless remotes and many nice features. That is what we opted for).

The most important thing you can is my first suggestion: Seek expert professional care in dealing with Barrett's. Do your homework before you have any procedure done. Many procedures to ablate Barrett's can cause a stricture, which can be highly dangerous in and of itself. If I had it to do over again I would go to the Mayo Clinic in AZ...they specialize in the treatment of Barrett's esophagus...more specifically Doctors Virender K. Sharma and David E. Fleischer. Look them up online. Give them a call. Good luck!
