Barefoot Contessa

So, we were at a hotel this week while Rich had a work conference
and I got to watch HGTV and the Food Network when I was in the room. I
got to see the Barefoot Contessa, and though I had no six year olds
around, our baby girl was enthralled with her. Her voice and mannerism
and the style of the show reminded me of Martha Stewart. I can
definitely see how a child watching the show in a hospital, say, might
want to meet her and try some of the food. I actually thought some of
her recipes or techniques were quite nice.

I also got to watch the Neelys, Paula Deen, Rachel Ray, Giada
Laurentis, Guy Fieri, Sunny's Real Food, and Claire on the Five
Ingredient Fix. There were some good recipes on all of them, IMO, and
some oddballs. Giada's voice was astonishingly annoying to me. Claire
was the worst. I watched one show, and though I kind of liked her
recipes on that show, she just irritated me completely. Paula Deen
overdid the y'all, in my opinion, but perhaps that is normal.

When a Southern native speaker says "y'all" it is barely noticeable
unless they are purposely laying it on thick. When a poser or a
transplant says it, it really sticks out. I don't know why; might be
a cadence or accent thing.

That doesn't surprise me, I don't know why people think children
might not notice her or think she was entertaining.

I always like Paula, but in the early days she had a pleasant accent,
easy to listen to, but as the years have gone by, she's laid it on
thicker and thicker.

Yes, she was pretty darn good in the beginning but as she's gone on
she's become more irritating. And for goodness sake, take off all
those honking rings when you've got your hands in food and mixing. A
bit of hand washing is NOT going to get all that goo out of the
mountings as you go on to the next dish. Blech!

I've noticed that too. But it's not the stuff on the rings from the previous
recipe that disgusts me.

I worked for a jeweler years ago so I'm pretty well acquainted with all the
nastiness that gets into every nook and cranny of rings, watches, and
bracelets, especially on the inside. Yeah, no problem, just dip it in the
food, Y'owl.

GF was watching Rachel Ray the other day and called me over and replayed a
cooking segment. Seems she was wearing a magnetic bracelet. When she got
near the steel skillet, it jumped itself into the pan. Durrr...

I've noticed that she never gets anything on those rings (it's
something I watch for) and on the rare occasion there was no way not
to keep them clean, she removed them.

I don't know what it is about her. I want to like her. Maybe because she
is fat. Maybe because she is fatter then me! Hehehe. And a lot of the
food she makes does look good. But there is just something about the way
she talks that strikes me as odd. She doesn't seem to show much emotion in
her voice or something.

I find Giada incredibly annoying as well. But I can see why she gets

I find her annoying too. For Italian food I like Lydia Bastianich and Mary
Anne Esposito.

Huh. I thought the general consensus here was they liked her.
