With less than a week to go until election day, the president put campaign politics to one side as he joined New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and other officials on a tour of flooded neighbourhoods and ruined streets.

He visited a community centre in Brigantine, New Jersey, which had been converted into a shelter and told evacuees: "The entire country has been watching what's been happening.

"Everybody knows how hard Jersey has been hit. You guys are in my thoughts and prayers. We are going to be here for the long haul."

He later repeated that message of solidarity to all of those affected by the storm, pledging: "We are here for you, and we will not forget, we will follow up to make sure that you get all of the help that you need, until you have rebuilt."
