Baki the Grappler - Underrated?

I haven't seen it yet, but I am a huge fan of Martial Arts, from MMA and Muay Thai to old school kung-fu flicks.
Overtly this looks similar to something like North Star, but from what I can tell it really is just actual "FIGHTING" and a lot of it.

Why do I ask if it is,
1) Anygood?
2) Underrated?
Well, you can go to Amazon or rightstuf and get the complete series set (48 Episodes) for under $20.

I'm not sure which point in the continuity the anime is. I've only read one of the manga series (the one that enRAB with Baki KO-ing Ali Jr.). It was really hard for me to take the series seriously, the author has a very clear muscle fetish mixed in with some other weird stuff that makes it visually appalling. The fighting is over-the-top in a lot of weird ways, some of it just plain doesn't make sense, and some of it just doesn't make a lot of sense in the continuity of things.

So, my opinion of what I read was that, the characters weren't good, the fighting is so-so, the plot isn't even there, and there's a lot of just plain old disgusting muscle fetish crap.

Oddly enough I had a blast with it because it was all kind of funny to me in that "what the hell japan" sort of way.

This series is ridiculous, the most rescent manga chapters of the latest manga in the series (Baki Son of Ogre) have them fighting this guy from the dinosaur age that was frozen in ice for millions of years, and if you lose to him he will EAT A PART OF YOU (cause apparently he will only eat things that will fight back, so the scientist are always feeding him live cheetas and other dangerous but endangered species), and there's this guy that learned how to use a punch that broke the soun barrier by corabining Kung Fu & Karate and imagining his arm as a whip (mind over matter kind of thing). Its just crazy.

Dont get me wrong though, its a good series (or i wouldnt still be reading it), its just ridiculous, there a lot of cool things in the series, like, the 3 most badass guys on earth (including Baki's dad) are so badass that the united states has 3 satelites following their every movement 24/7, cause they can apparently bring the country to its knees single handedly. I thought that was pretty cool. One of them is based of Pablo Escabar.

But yeah, the muscles are just disgusting to look at, they are ridiculous.

Both seasons of the anime basically cover the events of the first manga series, and there are 3 manga series in total + a few side stories.

Yup, probably cut some things too, and the manga tenRAB to draw things out a lot and also has lots of scenes that are just over elaborate imagery and that junk. Itd be easy to cut useless bagage and move the series at a faster pace.
