Hey all,
I live in and am a citizen of Dubai, UAE; where the weather is extremely hot and humid from late May to mid September ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Dubai... ).

I wonder how I can create a cooler environment in my own backyard garden.

Maybe certain plants? certain shades? or maybe a certain device that can help decrease humidity/temperatures?
Please share your ideas.

NOTE: I do have a dog that spends most of his day outside, and a toddler brother that often plays outdoors too.

thanks in advance !

get a patio set table with four chaires and an umbrella in the middle.small swimming pool for your toddler brother.couple of lounge chaires.for plants i would do palm trees if they have them there and a couple of fruit trees that would look nice a barbacue grill.and if you have a tree already in your backyard make a swing for your brother out of a tire tube just get some rope and hang one end to the tree and wrap the other end through the tube and tie and you have a swing.

I would suggest growing some tall plants in self-watering containers, such as banana trees, palms, bougainvillea, etc. The shade from these plants and trees will provide you with shade and allow you to grow other plants and flowers below them that will add color and depth to your garden. The self-watering containers will reduce your need to water every day.

You could also build a latticed structure overhead in one area of the garden and grow vines over it to provide coolness and shade. A fountain also presents the idea of coolness, refreshment, and relaxation both visually and auditorily.

Go for plants that are native to the area and provide shade. If that isn't possible with native plants, get a big patio umbrella and one of those misting hoses.
