Backpacking Europe-paperwork needed?

What paperwork does someone who has never left the United states need to backpack throughout europe and explain what each is for. Thank youin advance.
 
A passport, at least three copies of it kept SAFE in different places (passports are a popular item for theft abroad-they can get as much as $20,000 on the black market)
Your driver's license and copies of it
A credit card
i would suggest you look up travel sites and talk to a travel agent, they can let you know specifically what you'll need to do and have to be safe in different countries.
