Backpacking Europe, I plan to work but how much money should I take?

I plan to work for a year after leaving school and then backpack for an extended amount of time. I was looking at around 6000-8000 euros, this would allow for basic food and possible stays in a hostel. (I'm taking a sleeping bag and hope to get board through helping farm owners and B&B owners like someone I know) I'll be doing a lot of rail travel, limited air flights and photography.

Also, how should I split my money? Debit cards, travellers checks or cash?

Thanks in advance.
The money would also be used to allow me to go to attractions and keep in touch with family.

Should I get a satellite phone?

:)
