Backpacking Europe: How many Euros would you take with you?

I plan to travel Europe (backpacking) for about a year and a half after school. I want to see all the regular sights and festivals, as well as go on rail road tours and hikes. I plan to buy clothes, bag and things prior to leaving.

What I'm not sure is how many Euros should I take? I saw an estimate of around $80 - $110 per day just for basic food and water and shelter, not including bus/cab/eating out. That would mean I'd have to take around 52000 euros, and I'm seriously not going to have that EVER. So I looked again and came up with 20-40 Euros a day (16500 euros overall).

I am prepared to do it on a budget, I mean camping, teaching english and other odd jobs. I don't expect to live in luxury whilst I'm doing it. So what would you do? Are any of these anywhere near accurate at all?
I thought 80-100 was expensive aswell, I kind of had a mini heart-attack when I changed it into AUS$. I was thinking of budgeting 35 a day, but just wanted another opinion. I think it also depends on which country you are in. I also think couch surfing, working in B&Bs and volunteering in hostels would be a good idea, as I want to stay in each country I visit four around a month or at least a couple of weeks. :)

Good luck with your trip!
