I've read on various forums that 60 litres is sufficient to travel to Australia for five months, but I don't know how big this actually is short of going to shop to find out! I'm not really backpacking as such, just staying put in Melbourne.
Roughly how much stuff would you be able to fit in it? talking in terms of clothes, etc.

60 litres is a lot - many suitcases are that size. Remember to roll your clothes as they take less space, and if you are staying put, all you need to take is a couple of changes of clothing to start you off, and a couple of changes will easily fit into into a 30 litre pack. Clothes in Aus are much cheaper than in the UK, so if something wears out, just buy a replacement down under (Coles, K Mart, Big W)
