Backing up itunes/media player?

I want to upgrade to a new computer. What's the best way of backing up all my music (I use both media player and itunes) onto an external hard drive so that all of my tags and artwork are saved also. Eg: do I use the "sync" option in Media player? Is there a similar function in itunes?

I don't know about any "sync" functions and I don't think I'd trust them completely for what you're seeking. When you "tag" a song, that tag becomes part of the music file and as long as you backup that file, then your tag will follow.

Regarding artwork and other library settings or features, I would just suggest backing up your entire "MY MUSIC" folder found in MY DOCUMENTS. Inside of that folder should be another folder named "iTunes." Is is inside of THAT folder that your artwork files, library settings, and other misc. files needed to restore iTunes can be found.

Just backup the whole folder and then drop it into the same location on your new PC and iTunes will provide you with the same listening and viewing options as your old PC.
