Back-up cars and to the end of the field question...?

Hello! I have a question about back-up cars in NASCAR. I know most of the time if a driver has to go to a back-up car that they end up going to the end of the field, but I know I've seen it once or twice before where they didn't have to give up their qualifying position when they had to go to a back up car. What decides whether or not they are sent to the back of the field?
