Hello!
My boyfriend who I am dating via long distance fell recently and he is still having back problems, I want to help him get better since I can not be there to help him. He is 16 years old and has very broad shoulders and has a muscular back, he has a large frame, not very fit, but he is not overweight ethier. His doctor said a while ago it is hard to hear his heartbeat because his veins are very small because of his frame and broad shoulders. The pain he is having in his back is occuring is on his right side of his back, just above the buttocks. I am taking any advice I can get. Please help!

The location you describe sounRAB like it may be the sacroiliac (SI) joint, but it's hard to say for sure since we haven't examined him like a doctor would. Low back problems can also cause similar symptoms.

How would he describe his pain (ache, sharp, stinging, etc.), and what makes it better or worse? Does the pain go down either of his legs also or is it confined just to that area? Is he able to sit and stand with no problems? Does he have problems sleeping?

If he hasn't already, he neeRAB to be seen by his primary care physician ASAP for an evaluation, and if his pain isn't improved by conservative measures (physical therapy, medications, etc.) after 1-2 months he should request an MRI and get in to be evaluated by a spinal surgeon. FYI that very few spinal surgeons know anything about the SI joint, so if that's what his problem is you'll need to do a lot of research to find a surgeon who does SI joint fusions who can evaluate him.

The vast majority of people (90%+) get better with conservative treatment, so hopefully he will respond well to that. Let us know the answers to the above questions and some more people on here may have more ideas for you.

Take care!
