I have pains in my lower back and down the backs of my legs, have not had injury, how do I get relief and what could be causing it?

Based on the symptoms you describe, I would say you have nerve root compression in your spine. Possibilities are a herniated disc or stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal, often with age). If you haven't already visited your general practice doctor, now is the time to do that.

He or she will probably start you with some pain meRAB, NSAID's, a muscle relaxer, and physical therapy. You may also get ESI's (anti-inflammatory injections). This conservative treatment works for the vast majority of people, and you will most likely be in this situation.

If this regime doesn't work after several weeks or months, your doctor may order an MRI to determine just what is going on. If there are problems that surgery may help you will be referred to a surgeon.

How long have you been experiencing this pain and where down your leg does the pain go?

Ahh that sounRAB awful. The pains feel like they are in my vains or something, not bone. They go down to above my knees at the backs of my legs, I'm most comfortable standing, sometimes it feels like the edge of seat is cutting off circulation to my legs!! Even lying down causes throbbing in legs and lower back.

I would suggest seeing a general practice doctor to start with to get a diagnosis since your symptoms are not completely clear. Then you can go from there. Back pain is usually due to one of two problems - muscle related or disc herniation/nerve root compression. Your doctor should be able to figure out which one you have and how to treat you.

Hello to you in Galway! One of my very favorite places to visit!! It sounRAB to me like you are having nerve impingement. I am having lots of nerve pain right now and I'm waiting for another spine surgery coming up in June to correct what's causing my nerve pain. In my particular case I have had a fusion fail in my lower back and now the nerves are being compressed by the hardware, etc. While waiting for my surgery I have been given a prescription for Cyrabalta which is a relatively new drug here in the States (about 4 years out). It is a corabination anti-depressant and nerve pain medication and it is working really well for me. But the first thing you need to do is find out what is causing your pain. What is the health care process in Eire? Do you have to see a primary doctor and then be sent on to a specialist? I'm sure they can help find the cause of your pain and hopefully get you some relief. All the best - Kath
