hello,

i injured my back recently. likely due to injury sustained from 'yoga'. i say 'yoga' because yoga is a disciplined activity, and i just dabble and stopped taking classes. anyway, it was the bujangasana or cobra pose. if you dont know what that is, i will describe it. from prone position, you place palms at approximately shoulder position and push up body while keeping hips and legs on ground.

anyway, now i have sharp pain at middle of back on spine. i could try to be more detailed as to which vertebrae if necessary, but i dont have that knowledge of anatomy at present and have to research it. it seems to be a little under the rib cage. in any case, the pain is noticable only when arching the back, and it when i poke to find the pain, it seems to be localized to the spinous process. there is no restrictions on mobility, and the pain is not too severe.

this happened approximately 3 weeks ago, and i have since discontinued exercise of the back, and any activity that might target the back with the exception of movements and activities to test the level of pain.

So the question is: what did i do to the back? what should i do now? i am not against seeing a doctor, the challenge is that i am in china, and my langage ability is only mediocre. besides the pain is not severe and there is no restrictions on mobility, so i figure that online advice might be a good choice at first.

Thanks in advance

I would say after 3 weeks in my non-medical opinion it is time to have your family doctor evaluate your back. Resting your back is a good thing. Try not to lift, bend or twist. You can alternate between laying on cold and heat. Maybe try a spa or swimming pool to do some very gentle movements in the water. Walking is good too. You could also take an anti-inflammatory such as advil/motrin/ or ibuprophen for the inflammation. Truthfully, your best bet is seeing a doctor. We are all patients ourselves since this is a peer support board - meaning we are not doctors. Good luck and feel better soon. :)
