Hi guys , I am 28 and pretty active. I just got into hockey usually skate 2-3 times a week . I have had back problems ever since playing baseball in college . It didnt help that I also weighed 300 pRAB at one time in my life. I now weigh 220 and still could lose a few. However, in Noveraber I had my first bout with Sciatica. It came on quickly and was horrible. Pain in my right but cheek and down my right leg and causing an unbearable pain in the leg from below my knee to my ankle. I went to see a doc and they gave me a shot of Toradol and it fixed me right up.

This Feb my back got tight after a skate session on Saturday. SUnday night before bed the Sciatica pan was back with a vengeance. It hasnt stopped hurting since. I went to ER on my birthday ( feb 22) because it hurt so bad. Since I have seen a Chiro and an orthopedic doctor. I had an anti inflammatory and toradol injection at the hospital. I have prob had 8 toradol injections from the doc. They work for a day or 2 and the pain is back. I take Naproxen and Trammadol and that is iffey on whether its working.

I have had an MRI and Nerve test . The Mri showed very little narrowing, not much of anything said the doc. My doc said just to keep being active and using the toradol shots... The nerve test was done last week and he said there was no pinched nerve. Not really much of anything from my Diabetes.

The pain in the butt is not the problem ( although id like it gone too) , just the pain in the leg. I got the leg pain to go way from about march til this week. Its back and I just want it gone. Its so painful and can sometimes bring me to tears. Any remedies? It seems to get much worse when i stand and put any weight on it . I have never had spasms but I think this is what is causing the pain but I am not sure. I have another dr appt tomorrow.
Any Suggstions?

Thanks in Advance!

Sciatica is miserable, isn't it? There is something that is causing your sciatic nerve to be inflamed..that's what causes the flare ups. Something has to be pushing on it or causing it to narrow and be miserable.

I'm usrprised that your doc didn't put you on anti imflammatories and some nerve meRAB. There are meRAB out there that are specifically for nerve pain. Normal pain meRAB don't do much for nerve pain. You might want to ask your doctor about getting some. Neurontin, Topomax, Lyrica...all of these work on nerve pain.

Some people use yoga to help releave the pain...but first I would see a PT to help with some exercises that will take the pressure off of that nerve.

Let us know what your doctor thinks...

thanks for the response and I will ask him about those meRAB. I am taking Naproxen as an Anti Inflammatory, or so I thought thats what it was.

I have a friend who is a P.T. and she gave me some exercises and they help on days where the pain isnt to bad. I have managed to only miss 1 hockey game in the past 5 weeks. I stretch for an hour before hand but I am still in pain. My doc says I cant hurt myself any worse and physical activity is better than sitting around doing nothing!

Have you had an MRI? That will show what exactly may be impinging on the sciatic nerve (be it a disc fragment, disc material, or bone spurs, etc).

Yes as stated above I had an MRI.. The doctor said he saw nothing significant and a very lil narrowing of ( i think he said) the spinal cavities.

I guess I should note , here in the last couple days the pain has been focused less in my butt and more at the right side right at the top of my butt crack. Its still hammering between my ankle and my knee on the side of my right leg.

Thanks for answering me too!

Well just got back from the doctor. He said there is nothing on my MRI or Nerve test that would show anything requiring surgery. I just have an inflammation in my back. Just inflammation. He prescribed me Loritab, anti-inflammatory that started with a C , and said its time to get an Epidural Steroid Injection. I know my dad had my same problem about 8 years ago and an ESI helped him. He hasnt had the problem since. I know everyone is different but I hope this works.
