I hope someone out there might be able to suggest something for me to try:
History: 39 year old male. Approx. 3 years ago I noticed my upper back was a little sore to the right of my spine. Mildly sore, bearable, more irritating than anything. Anyway, over the course of approx. the next year, it sort of came and went. During the second year, pain was always there, seem to be getting more persistant and more uncomfortable. I had previously had a prescription for clonazepam for anziety and found if I took this, it helped with the back pain. After visiting my Dr. she thought my back was tight and that the clonazepam was acting as muscle relaxer giving me some relief. Told me to go live with it. Anyway over the past year, the pain has gotten quite uncomfortable. One day I noticed my back felt really tight. I leaned back over the end of my couch and heard a loud crack.. Back felt better. Long story short, this back pain has gotten to the point where it's quite uncomfortable, and I'm cracking my back about 50 times a day for relief (no exaggeration). Not just the one crack, but a series of about 10 cracks and sometimes my sternum even cracks. Sometimes I can crack it 2-3 minutes apart. It's becoming quite cronic and I need to crack it constantly. I've been seeing a chriropractor for the last few months, as well as massage therapy. The chiro can crack it out, and it feels good for about 20 mins. I'm under no stress now (I was at one time due to divorce), but feel quite content and relaxed. The clonazepam can take the edge off the pain, but I feel it's losing it's effictiveness (I only take it when it becomes really unbearable and still a low dosage). I feel this is getting worse by the day and am worried where it is heading. My dr. tried giving me muscle relaxant, but that didn't seem to help with the pain and just made my heart race. I've had a recent CT scan for a spot on my lung that was detected years ago (which my dr. says is nothing, but they just check it once in a while to make sure it's not growing.) She said if there was anything in my back, it would have been caught on the CT anyway.
Has anyone else had similar issues or can suggest what I might try. Here is the strange thing: Sometimes for a couple of hours maybe 2-3 days a week, I will feel quite good and no pain forcing me to crack my back. Sometimes I can simply pull my shoulders back and hear a series of cracks which then gives me temporary relief from the pain.
The only other thing I can add is people have told me I walk a little slanted. (ie my right shoulder is lower than my left). I attribute this to years of field service work carring heavy tools, but no Dr. has ever looked at my back and said I looked crooked or anything.
What can I ask my dr. to do from here? I no this is not normal. I sometimes think maybe it's spine arthritis, or something in my diet that causes this back pressure and need to crack.
I would appreciate any suggestions or hearing from fellow sufferers.
Thanks,
Dave
