My mom had hip replacement surgery 3 months ago. Since then she has persistent lower back pain whenever she moves. I took her to the emergency room 3 weeks ago and the xray showed arthritic changes. It's hard to believe that it's only arthritis. I give her Tylenol but it doesn't help much. This has limited her to go out. I want to take her to a orthopedist but I'm afraid they will suggest surgery.

Is there anyone that has had hip surgery also have back problems as a result of it?

i have heard of people developing back pain after hip surgery due to the legs not being the same length any more because the prosthetic piece was not placed correctly and some other similar issues but the pain takes over a year to develop.

arthritis can be pretty serious because it tenRAB to be progressive if it were me i would seek advice from a specialist and if surgery was suggested i would get a second opinion and if i was unsure id decline the surgery.

Also, you know how much they manipulate and move you around in surgery, they could have stirred things up.

I would try to get her in with a spinal surgeon. They are an orthopedic who has additional training, I believe 2 years, in spinal surgery vs. an orthopedic.

Good luck and I hope she feels better soon.

Karen, although I have serious disc problems I also have severe arthritis in the Sacroiliac joints. Those are the joints that attach your pelvis to your spine. It can cause very bad low back pain. It'll be lower back about 1 1/2 inches over from the spine. It can do an excellent job of imitating lurabar spinal issues - I've needed to learn the difference between my SI Joint hurting or pressure on the sciatica nerve, which is about 2 inches over from the SI Joint and is caused by disc pressure.

Whew, that was a mouthful.

Anyway, I agree with Pepper...a good examination by a spinal orthopedist is a great idea.
