back firing and sputtering on 1994 dodge 4x4 pickup truck?

my truck is backfiring and sputtering it dont do it all the time but seems like when i am going down the highway in over drive it does it after maybe 10 to 20 minutes of driving if i drive threw town it seems to be ok i have notice a few times when at idle it runs kinda rough but a friend told me he thought it might be a fuel filter i dont know where that is located at either but i guess what i am asking is if anyone think they might know what the problem is and if it is the fuel filter where is that located at
where is the throddle body? do i just spray cleaner on it or do i have to take it off and apart?
 
Sounds to me like an air leak inside the vacuum. Maybe your throttle body is lose or you got some vacuum pipes cracked.
A fuel filter clogged would show mainly by giving you poor acceleration or intermittent drop of power.

I worked more years on cars than I can remember !
 
the gas filter should be along the frame on the drivers side. but if it was the gas filter it would cause hessitation. try cleaning the throttle body and check the air filter. it sounds to me like the mixture is wrong and the air filter can do that if it,s dirty. try driving in regular drive and see if it does it.
 
If the fuel filter has never been changed for 15 years, by all means change it. If the filter has less than 50,000 miles on it, I don't think that's the problem. Try accelerating up a steep hill. If the engine misfires, you most likely have an ignition misfire. Increased engine loading also occurs on the highway when your in overdrive and you step on the gas going 50 miles per hour or so. If it doesn't shift out of overdrive, the engine will lug and a misfire will show up. The answer above suggesting you drive in regular rather than overdrive is a good test. If the spark plugs have over 100,000 miles on them, change them as well as your spark plug wires if they've never been changed.
