Baby boy Urinary tract infection, Is CVUG necessary?

My 5 month old was recently diagnosed with urinary tract infection. We took him to the Dr and was prescribed some antibiotics. The Dr recommended an ultrasound and a CVUG test. We have no problem with the ultrasound. I understand that the CVUG test is to rule out reflux. But I was wondering:

-we can do without the CVUG???
-can we just test his urine monthly to ensure no re-occurrence of UTI???
-if CVUG is necessary, is the x-ray a cause for concern?
