B&A Readers: Past or present tense (plus BQ's)?

Do you prefer to read novels written in the past or present tense? Or does it depend on the type of novel?

BQ1: What is your favorite "popular" book (that you think everyone has read)?
BQ2: What is your favorite "unknown" book (that you think no one has read)?
BQ3: What's the most interesting gift you've ever been given?
BQ4: Doctor Who vs. Spock - who would win?

I'll read either, but I think I prefer on books written in the past. For no other reason than that is mostly what I am accustomed to and it's also what I write, so for me, perhaps its just a little easier to follow.

BQ1: What is your favorite "popular" book (that you think everyone has read)?
Harry Potter

BQ2: What is your favorite "unknown" book (that you think no one has read)?
House of the Scorpion (I'm sure plenty of people have read it but it's been out for many years now so it's never talked about)

BQ3: What's the most interesting gift you've ever been given?
I can't say I remember.

BQ4: Doctor Who vs. Spock - who would win?
I've never seen Doctor Who. But I have seen Star Trek, so I'll go with Spock

I prefer present tense; it makes me feel more like i am watching the story unfold instead of it being recapped
BQ1: Umm Catcher in the Rye, maybe? i know, i'm probably the only one that likes it
BQ2: Lamb by Christopher Moore. Its hilarious XD
BQ3: Um...i received a pack of scissors. Not interesting persay but definitely...sad lol
BQ4: Doctor Who ^^

I prefer past tense. Present tense tends to be too immediate. I get caught up in the action and I can't really process what's going on.

BQ1: The Harry Potter series, for all its hype is actually very good.
BQ2: I guess The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle is pretty unknown, because most people tend to think of it as a movie. It is my favorite book ever. EVER.
BQ3: Peruvian tripod butt-hole pig. It needs no explanation.
BQ3: Are you kidding? Spock! He wouldn't even break a sweat. He's super-human! Not to mention totally dreamy.

Much prefer past tense, though I have read some good present tense first person. I can't _stand_ present tense third person.

BQ1: Probably either Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings.
BQ2: Barbara Hambly's Dark Tower series.
BQ3: Not sure what you mean by "interesting". I've been given lots of gifts which I really wanted but other people might think were odd.
BQ4: Why would they fight? Neither is the sort of person who would do so by default.
