Awful gas mileage on 2010 Toyota Matrix?

My husband and I bought a brand new 2010 Toyota Matrix S, AWD, automatic trans. I wasn't expecting excellent gas mileage because of the AWD, but the sticker says 26mpg city, 32 highway. The day we bought it, we had to drive about an hour and a half home on the highway. That tank of gas got 250 miles at 25mpg. Now, three months and 2000 miles later, we're getting 14 mpg city. Fourteen! We can go less than 150 miles on a tank of gas, and it's costing more to fill up per month than it did when I had my gas guzzling Ford Explorer. I know there's a "break in period" and the car has to get used to my driving style, etc etc, but 14?? It sounds way too low for a brand new car. I called the dealership and they said to check the filters, which we have, and they're fine. I don't know what else to do. I feel completely ripped off. When our explorer pushed 200k miles and started going on the fritz, we could have bought a cheap used car. We bought new so we didn't have to worry about things going wrong, and I wanted better gas mileage than the 16mpg I was getting. Now...I'm getting 14....

Someone please help!!
