Away to go out for a morning walk, how long should i go for? :)?

Im 18 years old, this is me starting off my exercise routine, im thinking of walking in the morning 4-5 days a week!

Just wandering, how long should I make this walk last? I can do walks for up to an hour, or even more if I wanted. Just wanna know how long would be good enough to take effect for weight loss?
Oh and i would love to run but live in scotland and its been snowing, so its all icy outside :(
