just exactly what are you having surgery done on,or where on your body? i actually had my surgery done 'awake' only becasue i too was having bizzarre pain syndromes on one side of my mouth caused by sympathetic damage to my face? the anesthesiologist did not want to risk creating more problems for me since while intubating people there can at times be collateral damage to teeth of other issues,so when he asked me about having the shoulder surgery i was having done actually awake,i just listened to what he had to say. since the area of my surgery was also going to be nerve blocked as well,i did have this option. they just very heavily sedated me and i did not need that tube down my throat. i just wanted to mention this to you. it would depend upon just where and what your surgery is that would possibly give you this option. i would imagine if you did have to be intubated while awake, they would be sedating you pretty heavily before they did this. ask alot of questions about how they would do this so you know everything about what to expect.
