Aviation Headsets--Stereo or mono?

I'm buying my first headset and I've decided on David Clarks. I noticed that on the headset I borrow now, there is only sound in one ear. Does this mean it's mono or is it just broken? If mono headsets have sound in one, then can I assume that stereo uses sound on both ears? I find it harder to understand transmissions when its only blaring into one ear. I know this may sound like an intensely dumb question to you more experienced pilots. Bottom line: Stereo or mono, what's the difference?
