.avi for Palm conversion on Mac?

I know I've done this before, but can't remember how...

How do I convert an .avi file so I can watch it on my Palm? I'm using a Mac running OS X.

Thanks in advance for the help I know will be forthcoming.
 
By the way, I've tried just sending the .avi through the "send to handheld" icon, but it freezes halfway through.

And I don't want to use Kinoma; I downloaded a trial version of the software and installed it, but the trial version didn't allow me to watch anything on the Palm - so I couldn't get any idea of the quality of the images. I don't want to buy a pig in a poke.
