Average lifespan of a sport bike. Help!?

I'm completely new to bikes, and want to purchase one.

I want to buy a 250-500cc Ninja or GS500 as my first bike.

What should I ask the seller? How long will a motor last before repairs (Miles)? How long will parts last before repairs (As far as mileage and just age)?
