Avatar: Special Edition - IMAX version shorter than normal 3D version - why?

Hi all,

Saw Avatar first time round in a 'normal 3D' cinema, and now this special edition comes along...

Checking on the BBFC website, the new IMAX version is 166m 55s, and the new 'normal 3D' version is 170m 26s - 3

I believe it may be something to do with IMAX frame rates... The two releases are identical in both IMAX and standard 3D screens, content wise.

To fit the film onto the huge Imax platters, the extra footage has been added but the end credits have been re-positioned so that you can fit more credits onto the huge screen thus reducing the overall running time. If the credits hadn't been condensed in this way, the platter couldn't have coped with the extra footage.

Ah that actually makes sense...we always stay to the end of the credits at IMAX, and we both thought the credits were a lot shorter this time than first time round.
