avatar animation help(cgi)?

i was wondering in the movie avatar(directed by james cameron), how many polygons does one avatar or navi have, and what software did they use, and how does it look so real, my animations are not even close, i would even make a car or something and max out the polygons and everything, the car would have very high detail but it still doesn't look real( i would render it for about a month or 2
