Automotive question relating to 2.5 GM engine compatibility?

I need to know if I can make a 2.5 engine out of a Celebrity, Pontiac or Oldsmobile fit into an '87 Chevy Astro van that had a 2.5 originally. If this will work, I need to know the modifications that need to be done. What is the difference, exactly, between the engines?
