Automotive question about a '95 chevy monte carlo?

Recently I was driving and my car overheated and lights went on but thats besides the point when i stopped and opened up my hood i found that the serpentine belt was off...i had a friend check it out and found out that my idoler wheel/pulley was not longer working...my question for you is how hard is it to replace that and what steps if known would i have to go through to replace it. my car is a 1995 chevy monte carlo 3.1 l DOHC please respond anything helps at this point...serious answers only please thank you for your help
 
idler pully's have bearings inside of them, and eventually they do wear out and the grease inside fails and you get the idler spinning at engine speed with no lubrication to the bearings and the result is failure.
so the belt probably slipped so much on the idler that it overheated and broke apart. There's nothing unusual about that scenario.

No other damage should have been done at all. Just replace the belt and idler pully, and while you're at it, I'd take a look at the belt tensioner pully as well.
you overheated because the water pump stopped rotating when the belt slipped off.
