Indiana University police urged all those on the Bloomington campus to seek safe shelter early Sunday, saying an individual armed with a knife was believed at large after a person was found with stab wounds at an on-campus apartment complex.
"An individual armed with a knife is at large on the Bloomington campus," Capt. Laury Flint with the university police told The Associated Press by telephone. "If you are on campus take safe shelter in the nearest available room, lock the door if possible and remain in place until the police or a campus administrator know to you gives the all-clear."
She said university officers got a call to the Tulip Tree apartments about 3:30 a.m. Sunday and found a male victim with stab wounds who was subsequently taken to the university hospital. Flynt declined to give further details of what had happened and did not identify the wounded person further.
She said authorities were seeking possible suspects who fled from the apartments.
"We do have one victim at IU Hospital," she said, adding she did not know the severity of the wounds. "The victim is male and that's really all I have at this point. It's still evolving. We have units out investigating all the leads."
She said that while a lockdown was not ordered, all on campus should heed the call to seek shelter. She added numerous officers were on campus.
Indiana University tweeted the call to take shelter as an "ALERT" and told those on campus to lock doors and avoid windows. "Stay inside until we give all clear," the tweet concluded.
