audio settings on motorola cable box.?

I have a cable box (motorola DCH-3200).In the audio setup mode it has the option for light, medium, or heavy compression.

What are the purposes for the compression settings?

I am running my audio (via )hdmi through my denon receiver.I am running in stereo mode (only two speakers).


Also has a "matrix" setting.What is this for?
