Audio not working on Panasonic Viera TH-50PZ80U Plasma TV?

the audio is not working on the TV. it works through the external audio component but i'm trying to play a dvd and the audio for that goes directly through the tv (via a hdmi cable - it's actually a blu ray player) and there is nothing. the picture is fine but there is no sound. no audio on BRDs either.
